Patitas con Futuro is a branch of Cambiando Vidas, an NGO whose mission is to create positive changes for the most vulnerable populations in Peru.
Cambiando Vidas has about 350 volunteers working on 15 projects. One of those projects is Cambiando Vidas’ own shelter, Patitas con Futuro (paws with a future). We’ll focus on Patitas con Futuro in this post, but we encourage you to visit Cambiando Vidas’ website to support their other projects.
Patitas con Futuro works with street animals to give them medical care, food, and to spay and neuter them. As a result, their organization has a direct impact on reducing the number of future homeless animals. They target their visits in Lima’s poorest districts and work on community education with the goal of spreading sustainable and long-term change. Approximately 3,000 street animals per year benefit from Patitas con Futuro’s work.
In addition, they run frequent spay and neuter campaigns for pet owners in low-income areas, fixing approximately 100 dogs and cats per month. The service is free of charge.
Currently, Patitas con Futuro’s shelter houses 53 former street dogs. All of them have different stories but share the same dream—to find their forever home with a loving family.
While these dogs wait to be adopted, a man watches over the shelter 24/7, giving the animals lots of love and attention in between volunteer visits.

Below are the areas where Patitas con Futuro needs the most help:
One of Patitas con Futuro’s biggest priorities when receiving volunteers is for the volunteers to spend time with the shelter’s dogs. That helps the dogs undergo quicker emotional recovery, making them better prepared for adoption in a shorter timeframe.
One of the best ways to learn about upcoming volunteer opportunities with Patitas con Futuro is by following their Instagram and Facebook pages. If you need documentation to show proof that you’ll be arriving in Peru to volunteer, Patitas con Futuro will gladly prepare the paperwork for you.
Because Patitas con Futuro is a branch of Cambiando Vidas, you’re welcome to participate in Cambiando Vidas’ other community volunteer projects in addition to working with street dogs. They’re an active NGO, so you’ll have many opportunities to choose from.
Patitas con Futuro is always in need of the following donations:
Patitas con Futuro’s goal is to give the dogs they rescue a better quality of life, and donations help them with this mission. Kennels are of interest to them since it lets them increase the number of rescues they perform when searching the street for abandoned animals.
Adoption is the dream scenario for the dogs at Patitas con Futuro. Not only will you be able to give your pet their forever home, but you’ll open space for Patitas con Futuro to rescue more animals in need.
Are you a plane ride away from home? Flying with an adopted animal isn’t a walk in the park like the day you two bonded, but it’s not impossible either. Let us give you a head start with our guide on How to Fly Your Pet out of Peru.
If you find an abandoned or abused dog in Lima, you can contact Patitas con Futuro for support. They can help guide you with advice on what to do.
Since Patitas con Futuro’s animal shelter can only hold around 50 dogs at any given time, they may or may not be able to take in the animal. Between people dropping off animals unannounced at their doorstep and volunteers seeking out dogs in need on the street, they often have a full house.
